Growing up as a military brat, every few years, my family would pack up our lives and move to somewhere new across America. This constant mobility meant I was always adjusting to new environments, schools, friends, and new groups of people. While it could be overwhelming at times, these experiences also taught me valuable lessons that have influenced my desire to become an educator and my understanding of what it means to make a positive impact on others.

One of the most significant ways my upbringing as a military child shaped my worldview is by giving me a deep appreciation for the role that educators play in the development of young people. Moving so frequently meant that I was constantly entering new classrooms, navigating new curriculums, and trying to integrate into new circles. This could be intimidating, however, through each transition, I was fortunate to encounter teachers who not only taught me the subject matter but also took the time to make me feel welcome, supported, and understood. These teachers made a lasting impression on me, demonstrating the difference an educator can make in a child’s life.

I quickly realized some of the challenges that came with adjusting to a new school every few years, struggling to connect with classmates and dealing with the emotional strain of being the “new kid.” These experiences inspired me to pursue a career in education, specifically as a teacher. I wanted to be the kind of educator who made other students feel valued, seen, and supported, just as I had been and help students navigate their own hurdles, whether those challenges are academic, social, or emotional.

Being part of a military family also provided me with the opportunity to experience and appreciate a wide range of cultures and communities. Military families often come from diverse backgrounds, and each new location offered me the chance to immerse myself in different ways of life, languages, traditions, and perspectives. This exposure to diversity not only expanded my understanding of the world but also highlighted the importance of inclusivity and cultural sensitivity in any educational setting. I know that every student will bring their own unique background and experiences into the classroom, and as an educator, it is crucial to create a space where all students feel comfortable and valued.

Diversity and inclusivity is something I hope to incorporate into my own teaching in the future. I recognize that each student is different, with their own strengths, challenges, and needs and as an educator, I believe it is my responsibility to meet students where they are and provide them with the support and encouragement they need to succeed.

In many cases, school was the one constant I could rely on during times of transition, and the educators who took the time to ensure I became comfortable and felt included. As a future educator, I want to create that same sense of stability and trust with my students Whether through providing a safe space in the classroom, offering individualized support, or simply showing kindness, I want to be the teacher who helps students feel like they belong.

I recognize that my experiences as a military child have afforded me a unique perspective, and I want to use that perspective to make a positive impact in my community. I am passionate about inclusion in the classroom and beyond. I plan to use my education to help students not only excel academically but also develop the social and emotional skills they need to navigate the challenges of life. I want to teach my students that they are capable of overcoming obstacles, that their differences make them unique and are valuable.

In the future, I also hope to be involved in community outreach programs that support military families and other groups who face unique challenges. Having experienced the ups and downs of military life firsthand, I understand how difficult it can be for children and families to navigate the constant changes and uncertainties that come with moving frequently or being separated from a loved one.

Ultimately, my goal as an educator is to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment where all students feel valued and empowered. I hope to inspire future generations of students to not only excel academically but to also become open-minded, and resilient individuals. My experiences as the child of a Veteran have shaped my academic and career goals, and I am committed to using my education to make a difference in the lives of others. Through empathy, understanding, and a commitment to diversity, I believe I can contribute to creating a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for all students.
